Tax questions
On Form 1040, tax is usually computed from taxable income (after deductions) using IRS marginal brackets that change by tax year and filing status.
Each rate applies only to income in that band—not to your entire income. Use IRS Publication 17 or tax software for exact numbers.
In the US, real estate tax is levied by counties and other local governments. Due dates and installment schedules vary widely—some bill annually, others semi-annually or quarterly.
Note: Check your county treasurer or tax collector site for the official calendar and amounts.
Most US freelancers report business profit on Schedule C (or partnership/S-corp flows if applicable), pay self-employment tax (Schedule SE) on net earnings, and often make quarterly estimated payments (Form 1040-ES).
- 1099-NEC / 1099-K: Clients or platforms may report amounts paid to you.
- Sales tax: If you sell taxable goods/services, state rules may require collection and remittance.
Rules depend on entity type, state, and income level—use a preparer or software for your situation.
Deadline questions
If you pay the IRS late, common consequences include:
- Failure-to-pay penalty: Generally accrues until the balance is paid (rates and caps are set by law).
- Interest: Compounds daily on unpaid tax from the due date.
- Failure-to-file penalty: Much larger if you miss the filing deadline without an extension.
Tip: Pay on time whenever possible to avoid penalties and interest.
Yes. The IRS offers installment agreements for many individual balances, and states have similar programs.
- You may apply online or by mail; setup fees and terms depend on the balance and how you pay.
- Interest and penalties can continue until the debt is paid—read the approval letter carefully.
Eligibility and limits change; check IRS.gov “payment plans” for current rules.
Deduction questions
If you itemize deductions on Schedule A, you may deduct qualifying medical and dental expenses to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your AGI (federal rules; verify for the tax year).
- Doctor and dental visits, prescriptions, certain insurance premiums, and more when they meet IRS definitions.
Many taxpayers take the standard deduction instead—compare both options each year.
Home mortgage interest is often deductible on Schedule A if you itemize, subject to limits on loan amount and use of proceeds (see IRS Topic 504 and your Form 1098).
- Points and mortgage insurance premiums may also qualify in some years—verify current law.
The standard deduction may still be better for you; run the numbers or ask a preparer.
